hanako66 cool idea Jul 21, 2008 4:58 PM This is such a cool group, I'm so glad I found it! I have two questions... I would like to use ribbon as a decorative "wainscoting" and am not sure how to adhere it to a wall...I am concerned about eventual removal...any ideas? Also, I would like to paint a ceramic lamp base that I have. What is the best type of paint to use? I would like a red, shiny finish..it is a chinoiserie style lamp. xoxo Thanks!
justjaime27 Help! What color paint for my bedroom? Jan 11, 2008 8:28 AM Tried "Baby Turtle" by Benjamin Moore. Hated it. Onto the next color idea! Help! I can't decide what color to paint our bedroom! I love the quilt, it was given to us as a wedding gift from my grandma...it's handmade. So I'd like to decorate using that as inspiration. My room does not get a lot of sunlight in it, so I am thinking I would like to go a little lighter on the paint. The paint color you see above the bed is just sample paint...thank goodness, as I'm not thrilled with it at all. It's Baby Turtle by Benjamin Moore. Not a fan. Please help me pick a paint color so I can make a comfy cozy bedroom! Thanks all! -Jaime
west elm style "Ask Angel" Dec 11, 2007 4:05 PM I recently received the following design question from Pargie: Hello Angel, I uploaded photos of my living room to my photo gallery. (I’ve attached them to this message for ease of viewing) I am having difficulty deciding on wall colors and decorating in general. You can't see it on the photo, but two of the walls I have painted light blue and yellow (I will post more photos shortly), and the other walls are beige. My idea was to paint the two larger walls white and the wall (behind the sofa) either a light tan or a dark or light grey. My idea was to create something that is both natural (almost rustic) and modern (my inspirations are Anthropologie and Midwestern Modern). I'm also feeling like the room is getting cluttered. Should I remove all of my silver picture frames, accessories, and baskets? Am I rambling? I'm also considering adding some shelfing and artwork. I need some serious help. Any decorating hints you have would be helpful really. Sincerely, Pargie Following is my response: It’s a little tough working solely from photos, but I love that you are thinking creatively about how to use your space and following are a few ideas I think will help you reinvent your living room: Start with the walls! Pick one neutral color for all the walls to establish a better flow which dually will make your space appear larger. If that sounds too stark for your taste, I would suggest you pick one accent wall, possibly the half yellow wall, and paint it your favorite color or use a great modern wallpaper with a graphic print. Now lets move to the floor. Right now it appears there is a perimeter decorating scheme going on. Don’t forget the center of the room! I’d start by adding an area rug that will help ground the space & I would also suggest adding a coffee table or upholstered ottoman in front of your dominant couch to anchor the space. Better use of the center of the room will ultimately bring the whole space together. As far as furniture, I think the arrangement with the TV on the blank wall (rather than the window wall) makes a better use of your space. I would group the matching sofas together and place the seagrass couch under the staircase to create a more cohesive look. The staircase becomes a nook of it’s own. If you decide to buy some new pieces, you could try a small sofa and two occasional chairs. Place the two chairs flanking the window with a table between them and you’ll have a great space for socializing and watching TV. And don’t forget to accessorize! Try adding larger decorative items to the walls, such as artwork and more substantial mirrors which will add dimension, style and light. To that end, if your silver frames are feeling like clutter on table tops, use them to create your own personal gallery – cleaning up the space and creating distinct, personal art. Blow up your favorite photos and put them in a collection of wall frames to create a personal picture gallery. Also, I see some great throw pillows on your sea grass couch which do a nice job of softening the lines. You could try some on the slipcover couches too to give them an updated feel. Adding color and texture will go a long way to making the space feel fresh. What do we think? You can pick and choose or try all of these ideas. Hopefully these hints are helpful to achieving your new style! Be sure to post new photos of the transformation when you’re able to find the time to complete your new look. ~@
west elm style three easy ways to go glam for the holidays - and year round Dec 3, 2007 11:31 AM One of the fabulous things about my job is being surrounded by great design minds. With the seasonal whirlwind of decorating and entertaining swiftly upon us, I tapped west elm’s creative director of design – who is also an exceptional entertainer - Alex Bates to share her expertise and show us how to create a modern and chic mood flawlessly and easily without breaking the bank! I hope you love these as much as I do. ~@ three easy ways to go glam for the holidays - and year round - Alex Bates, Creative Director west elm design There are lots of ways to make your home festive and fabulous for the holidays, and reflect your personal style. This season is all about glam and metallic accents. Just like your favorite patent wedge makes every outfit feel chic, there are a few little things that will make a big difference in your home this holiday season. You don’t have to be overwhelmed and you don’t have to spend a fortune. These simple ideas will help set the stage for a stylish holiday and create a look with staying power that will last into the New Year. Mix up glam and nature You and your home should shine this holiday season. A small detail can make a big impression with minimal effort. Gold or silver banded glasses are an easy way to add drama when setting the table or when setting the mood for a chic cocktail party. Simple lines can mix and match with holiday patterns or you can create a whole metallic table for a more dramatic statement. In the living room, add a mirrored coffee table. It will soften the room and the table adds a sophisticated decorator touch, especially when mixed with a natural sheep skin area rug. Mix the earthy and the elegant. A large vase filled with natural Manzanita branches and hung with crystal strand ornaments makes quite the statement in a hall or on a table, and reflects candle light beautifully. Carry the festive sparkle through your home when decorating your tree and mantle. Create an all silver Christmas tree with silver and crystal garland, adding a mix of silver and white ornaments. Collect vintage ornaments and mix them in to create your own style. **Get the look at west elm: metallic double-banded barware & dinnerware, mirror coffee table, convex drum table. Add: chandelier strands/cut chandelier ornaments, silver garlands/ornaments and a sheepskin rug. Mix the primitive and polished Animal prints have gotten a great makeover in recent seasons and this year, they are popping up in new styles and patterns everywhere. A little animal goes a long way, try the patterns as an accent piece in the home. Combine timeless and chic animal prints with gold metallic holiday decorations for a fun twist. A zebra stocking pairs perfectly hanging on the mantle next to a tree decorated with gold or vintage ornaments. Or toss a throw pillow on your sofa and get a whole new look anytime you feel like it. **Get the look at west elm: zebra & leopard stockings, tree skirt and pillow covers, gold vases, tortoise shell bowls and vases. Light up the season and your home Last, but not least, don’t forget the lighting. Remember, lighting sets the mood of any holiday party or room so get creative and replace harsh bulbs with soft candlelight. Combine different sizes and shapes of glass lanterns in monochromatic groupings for dramatic effect over a table. Carry the look through the room with complimentary votives and candles sticks on the table or mantle. The room and your guests will enjoy a flattering glow. **Get the look at west elm: art glass lanterns, vases and votives. animal print stockings double banded metallic glassware art glass lanterns white & silver ornaments
